The Blog (Us/ing Us) Traits :

  1. Radical
    • personal
  2. Entertaining
    • fast
  3. Network
    • machine
  4. Links
  5. Text based
    • most effective way to communicate
  6. Time/Speed (High frequency)
    • immediacy (read with speed-we capitalize on speed, but interrupt it) and Space (media different-ex. New York City)
  7. Personal
  8. Collaborative (discussion and is negotiated)
  9. Easily Accessible (to peoplewho have access)
  10. Accreditation
  11. No power structures (anyone can publish, the power rests in filtering)
  12. Grouped by topic, not publisher

Two types of blogs:
  • opinion
  • information

Did you know?
  • By networking, a shift is happening. What can we do about these changes?
  • Produce and criticize new media!
  • How we perceive society drastically changes as society changes
  • Say something with meaning-so it has restraints

In writing blogs:

  • Avoid overly general statements (stay specific, go in-depth)
  • Always start with what you're going to start with (start with the main idea, not vague statements)
  • Don't repeat your ideas (get right to the point)
  • Use one example to keep drilling down
  • Use other articles and new content
  • Read more blogs (this will help you become more meticulous)
  • Proofread
  • Reread all of your work out loud
  • Use links to provide context for your post
  • Use descriptive words (ex.-avoid "like", use "for example" instead)
  • Eliminate phrases like "and so on", "etc". Give what "so on" is-ex. narrative media
  • Be precise about the world (avoid words like "thing"... what is the thing?) (give the viewers what they are going to read for)
  • Work on saying something different or something meaningful (but look for a point of unity across those differences)
  • Use a quote to expand the conversation, not as an answer to a problem.
  • Show the work that got you to the conclusion
  • Good writing focuses on detail- take the implicit and make it explicit
